The new Torrey View development in San Diego, developed by Breakthrough Properties and designed by Flad Architects, features three scientific workplace buildings and a separate amenity building integrated into the dramatic natural landscape. The project encompasses approximately 500,000 square feet of space for biotechnology companies.

The facades incorporate deep coffered profiles around the windows, which reference the regional geologic formations and emphasize the varied rhythm of the glazing openings. The facades were realized through a large format panel (megapanel) approach with GFRC and high performance insulating glass units forming the visible exterior surfaces and with concealed steel frames attaching the panels to the building structure. The steep, concentric stepping of the GFRC panels, combined with the radiused openings and expansive area of each single casting are a significant design and fabrication achievement.

Heintges provided building envelope consulting services during all phases of design and construction.
