The Museum of Modern Art’s latest expansion and renovation, by Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Gensler, adds significant new exhibition space while “opening up” the museum entrances and circulation spaces to the surrounding area of Midtown Manhattan.
The expansion integrates the museum’s 2004 Yoshio Taniguchi addition and extends programmatically into the lower floors of Jean Nouvel’s 53 West 53rd Street, deploying minimally-supported structural insulating glass further reinforcing the dialogue between gallery space and the environment outside. The glazing modulates visual factors like transparency and reflectivity through the use of custom ceramic frit and laminate-integral stainless steel mesh while simultaneously providing the thermal separation required by the enclosed gallery spaces.
